Peter and Carole in Spain - September 2013

At the end of September we decided to spend a week touring in Northern Spain. The Picos de Europa were truly spectacular and we found ourselves using roads I would never have attempted on a solo - 1 in 5 gradients, adverse cambers and the tightest hairpin bends with no crash barriers became the norm for a couple of days and the Goldwing just kept on cruising - absolutely fabulous. Then nip down the superb Spanish A roads to sample Segovia and get a feel for a different area. This rounded the week off nicely before we headed back to Santander and the ferry home to a thoroughly grey, drizzly and depressing Portsmouth.

We'd never been to Spain on a bike/trike before but the roads there were simply designed for 'wings. If you've never been, you've got to go - life doesn't get better than this on two ( or three) wheels!

Assen Holland - 21 September 2013

Again proving that some of us go off on our own, Stephen and Lynne took their baby (Wellington) out to Assen in Holland for the British Super Bikes meeting 19-21 September 2013.  The trip went from Lincoln down to Folkestone, for an overnight stay at the Southcliff Hotel.  Next day, P&O ferry from Dover to Calais and then a 300 mile hike up to Assen.  The BSB racing proved to be as competitive as ever and accommodation was found in a lovely B&B called Bij de Molen in nearby Rolde (that means by the Mill).  The proprietors 'Henk and Ali' had an old GL1000 Goldwing tucked away in the back (see pic below) but it was still in nice condition and we also shared the B&B with 'Derek and Angela' who had arrived on a Yamaha with custom sidecar.  At the  Assen TT Circuit, Stephen was the incident Commander at Post 1 supported by a group of willing Dutch marshals led by the Post Chief 'Herman Stagge'.  Our task was to keep the racing going and the riders as safe as possible by manning the first 3 flag posts along the Start straight.  The journey continued into Germany, on the following Monday, to visit friends in Meerbusch near Dusseldorf.  Finally the return trip on Thursday via Antwerp to Calais, P&O ferry to Dover, and then back home.  What a trip !!!

Brightonia - 13 October 2013

Just to prove that we don't have to go out as a group every time, Sue and Doug went to ‘Brightona’ Brighton’s 10th anniversary on Sunday 13 October 2013.  They enjoyed breakfast with some of the Sussex wingers, and were made most welcome.  Thanks to Jane and Mick who were great hosts.  It rained all day Sunday, but we all had a good time.  Thanks Sussex Wings for a great day out.

Duxford Imperial War Museum - 15 September 2013

On a cool and dull Sunday morning, 5 intrepid bikers met at the Sleaford McDonalds cafe to ride out to the Duxford Imperial War Museum.  The weather forecast was for rain and high winds, but they were not put off or dismayed.  Led by Larry, 4 bikes (with just one pillion) set out into the the wild, down the A15 to Peterborough, then A1M, A14 and M11 to arrive 80 miles later at the IWM, where it had just started to rain.  Entry to the site is a hefty £17.50 each, but the museum is well worth it.  We spent the next 3 hours (that's £5.83 per hour or approx 10p per minute) looking around and taking photos before returning to the car park to dress again for the weather.  By this time, the rain had come and gone but we still suffered the tail end of the downpour and the wind had become extremely agitated with very harsh cross-winds hitting us from time to time.  Larry set a steady pace for the return until we arrive at the Peterborough Services where we split to go separate ways.  Despite the weather, we had a great day out.  Thanks to Larry, Martin, Trev and marion and of course your truly for keeping the Lincswings pennants flying.

Scarborough in September 2013

Here is a quick shot taken by Ron and Dee as they enjoyed a few sunny days in Scarborough with their trusty GL1500.  Here we see Dee describing 'the one that got away' or is she estimating the size of the 'Home Made Do-Nuts' on sale behind her.  Actually, she was asking "Where are all the other Goldwings?".
So lets get out there and show them off !!

Olde Goole Gala - 18 August 2013

Despite the rain and high winds of Saturday,  1 Trike and 4 Bikes showed up at McDonalds, Scunthorpe on a warm and clear Sunday morning.  It was 09.00 and we set off along winding lanes for the Goole Showground just 20 miles away.  We arrived on site to find people setting up and we were soon ushered into our display slot at the entrance to the show ground.  Over the next hour we received further arrivals who had come straight to Goole and so the total included Sandy/Jayne (Trike), Mark/Debbie, Stephen/Lynne, Ron/Dee, Martin/Di, Alan/Joan and Trev.  At 11.00ish, the parade finally got organised and set off with a marching band at the from, followed by classic cars, floats and then the Lincs Wings wobbling along behind at walking pace.  Despite the difficulties of riding over potholes at less than 3 mph, we were greeted by the crowd and managed to collect donations for the Notts & Lincs Air Ambulance.  Returning to the showground, we then wandered around to enjoy the entertainments.  A little later, Alan announced that it was Joan's birthday and after a round of "Happy birthday to you ..." we were treated to a scrummy picnic lunch and Joan received birthday cards and presents.

Friars Carse    2-4 August 2013

Lincs Wings members rode north to attend the weekend at Friars Carse in Scotland.  Members attending included Ray/Sue, Mark/Debbie, Trevor/Marion, and Jayne and myself.   Others included David/Christine from Washington (GB) and Andy/Lesley from Preston.   Friday's long ride was easily forgotten once arriving at the beautiful building and grounds of Friars Carse.  After a few drinks and checking in, a 3 course meal was enjoyed by all, followed by coffee and a chance to sit back and chill.

Friday's discussions soon turned to GWOCGB and some very interesting thoughts raised a few eyebrows and shakes of the head.  Many of us had a good time going off on various visits to local attractions and some on a "must do" ride out through the mountains on the Saturday before returning for the evening meal and more lively discussions.

The black tie event on Saturday evening met with different amounts of success for various reasons. Then Sunday morning saw some tired looking faces, lifted with another fine breakfast, before couples said their goodbyes and set off back home.

Fir Park Rideout - 21 July 2013

Seven members of Lincs Wings riding three GL1800s, three Trikes and a GL1500, met at The Transport Cafe, Caenby Corner in the morning of Sunday 21st July. Some were tempted by the breakfast menu whilst others had stopped on route, at Barneys Cafe, for a full fry up.  Setting off at 10am prompt, the convoy was led by Ron/Dee followed by Larry (our ex Chairman - nice to see him), Ray/Sue, Alan/Joan, new members Peter/Carole, Trevor and Marion, with Mark/Debbie once again "Tailend Charlie" (thanks) . The direct route for Fir Park is just 9.5 miles but Ron and Dee had planned a much more interesting, and longer, route totalling almost 58 miles. Travelling, on B roads to the South bank of the Humber via Kirton Lindsey, then past the very scenic Humber River and Reeds Island and to most riders' surprise, left onto the Humber Bridge which is now toll free for motorcycles and trikes (although some trike riders were furiously search for some change for the toll).  Over the bridge and around the roundabout on the North bank to return southwards via the bridge, much to the amazement of some bikers parked in the bridge lay-by. The journey was completed via Brigg, Howsham and onto the Fir Park Wings and Wheels event.  Refreshment and food was enthusiastically devoured by the members before some left for even further riding. a pleasant day out with something different and unusual.

Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre - 14 July 2013

A slightly cloudy but mild morning found the Lincs Wingers assembled at the Pride of Lincoln Hotel ready for a monthly meeting and a ride out.  So at around 11.00 the group started engines and prepared to brave the Lincolnshire roads on just a 35 mile journey that took us through Lincoln, Fiskerton, Bardney and Woodhall Spa down to Tattershall Thorpe.  This ride-out was a little different because we took the small winding roads through the villages and kept off the main drag.

Photos provided by Stephen and Lynne

Arriving at the museum one hour later, we arranged ourselves in front of the Lightning fighter aircraft, and deployed the LINCS WINGS Banner.  Visiting the museum was educational and enjoyable and the Tea Room made a pleasant rest place with some yummy teas and cakes.

Wolds Bikers Charity Bike Night - 12 July 2013

The Wolds Bikers Charity Bike night, held at the Coach and Horses Pub in Billinghay, attracted a large number of classic bikes as well as visiting bikers.  Lincs Wings was afforded a special place to display our machines which included 2 Trikes and 2 Bikes: Mark and Jayne, Dick and Pat, Trev and Marion and Stephen and Lynne.  The event was aimed at raising monies for local charities such as Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and the Lifeboat service, as well as encouraging membership of biking organisations such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists and of course Wolds Bikers.  A warm and pleasant evening bought out bikers by the dozen and the car park soon filled with all makes and models as interesting as the display bikes inside.

Lancaster Night - 26 Jun

Mo, Dick/Pat, Jayne & Sandy had a look at the Lancaster night over at East Kirkby. The event was well attended with some rather nice machines on display and with a wide variety of makes & models, plus the odd unusual ones. The Lancaster was fired up at 8pm and a few lucky people had a taxi ride around the field.
A few other Goldwings attended as well as a beautiful Honda CBX1000 6cyl.
