Boston Bike Night - 3 July 2025

Each year the small town of Boston in Lincolnshire, hosts one of the largest bike nights in the country.  This year, Stephen, Trevor and Marion went on our goldwings accompanied by Richard on his Triumph, to visit the show.  We arrived around 6.00pm and the town was already grinding to a stand-still with newly arriving bikes, visiting crowds in cars, and of course Bostonians trying to escape from work to get home.  So it took about 15 minutes just to move the 1 mile from the outskirts to the Wide Bar Gate entry to the event.  As we rode in, bikes lined both sides of the road and so we continued on to the car park at the Boston Stump, which was just as crowded.  The marshal waved us into aslot that was barely long enough for a skate board, but I shrugged and squeezed my wing into the available space.

After parking up and stripping down to a comfortable dress style, we all went to the Chip Shop for a nice serving of Fish and Chips and a coffee.  Marion had a milkshake and I was a bit jealous but stuck with my coffee.  Despite the press of the crowd, we were served quite quickly and found a vacant table so we could enjoy our repast.

After munchies we took a walk around the bike night to meet people and enjoy the sights of all the different bikes.  As for every year, there were many younger riders on their Crutch Rockets sitting there revving their bikes to make the windows rattle.  I was afraid we might see piston ring parts come shooting out of their exhaust pipes.    On the way around we met other wingers, although we were spread all over, but it was nice to say hello.

Finally around 8.00pm we returned to our bikes to find a ring of admirers, so we took the time to chat and explain what all the lovely buttons did.  Then with a little bobbing and weaving, we manoeuvred our bikes out of the parking just to join the traffic jam trying to escape the town.  Despite the difficulties of gettin in and out of town, it was still a worthwhile visit and we look forward to going again next year.

My thanks to Trevor, Marion and Richard for joining me to make an enjoyable evening ride-out.

Norfolk Wings Drop-in - 14 June 2025

Last weekend Mark & Debbie went to the Norfolk drop-in together with Sue & Doug. Mick & Jayne Delaney from Sussex also came along and Ian & Sue joined us on the Friday morning for the ride out to the Norfolk workhouse which was very interesting. On Saturday the ride out was to Thetford to see the Dad’s Army Museum. We stayed in a pod which was lovely. On the Saturday evening we joined everyone for games which was fun and lovely to catch up with people we haven’t seen for a while. The weather was glorious and we had a great time and great ride outs.  Congratulations to Norfolk Wings, they were brilliant and couldn’t have done more to make it a great weekend away.

Meeting Biker Mates - 4 June 2025

Stephen and Lynne had a call from their friends in Italy to say that Sandro and Sergio would be coming on their bikes to tour the UK, see the sights and meet up with friends and family.  We got to know these guys when we lived in Belgium and Stephen was Sandro's sub-aqua instructor.  It's been around 20 years since we saw each other so it was a great opportunity to meet up.  Accordingly, Stephen and Lynne set out on the Goldwing at 08.30 to ride down to Peterborough services on the A1 as our agreed meeting place.  Sandro was riding his Yamaha and Sergio was on his BMW.  The pair of them arrived at the services (and promptly went the wrong way down a one-way system).  However, we finally got together to share an espresso and catch up on our lives.

Following our meet up, the Italian duo planned to ride up to Manchester and even had thoughts of heading up as far as John-O-Groats.  So we discussed the pros and cons of British highways and byways and nice places to visit.  At least Wednesday was a lovely sunny day so our ride out to meet them was most enjoyable.  Who knows what the rest of the next few weeks' weather was going to offer them.

After a few hours we let them get on with their journey and so we all got ready to mount up.  Sergio led the 3 bikes out of the car park and immediately diverted into the lorry park with Sandro on his tail.  So we waited for the pair of them to re-appear and decided to lead the way out to the A1 and back towards home for us and to their onward journey for Sandro and Sergio.   I do hope they get on okay and enjoy their tour of the UK.  Here we are: Stephen, Sandro and Sergio.

Happy trails

Woodland Waters - 19 May 2025

Mark, Stephen, Trevor and his granddaughter Beth, decided to enjoy this wonderful May evening weather and take a ride out to Woodland Waters Bike Night in Ancaster, near Grantham.  For Stephen and Trevor this was just a few miles from home, but Mark had clocked around 70 miles to get down from Scunthorpe.  In the past, Ancaster Bike Nights used to be very well attended, indeed crowded, and it used to be difficult to find space at the bar to get a drink.  However, this Monday evening, the atmosphere was pleasant but un-crowded and we walked straight in to get refreshments and meals.

There was a good selection of bikes visiting Woodland Waters as seen from the photos below, but we had the only 3 Goldwings present.  So after a drink, a meal and a pleasant chat, we parted company to make our way back home and still enjoy the balmy evening weather.

Lincswings Meeting - 18 May 2025

Lincswings members finally got together again at Rase Park on Sunday 18 May 2025.  This was our first meeting this year so it was a bit of an occasion.  Unfortunately, our previously planned meeting in April had been cancelled when Sandy had problems with his van, which had to be fixed.  Anyway, we showed up but our numbers were a little thin on the ground.  Furthermore, only Stephen & Lynne and Trevor & Marion showed up on Goldwings as every one else opted for cars.  However, Mark & Debbie should be excused because they brought along Alan in his wheel chair after the amputation of his right leg due to blood clots.  I have to say that Alan, despite the loss of his leg, was looking much better than the last time we had met.  Also along for the meeting was of course Sandy, with apologies from Jayne who was not feeling up to the trip, David, Trev & Marion, Stephen & Lynne, and Martin C.

Sandy gave us a run down of the National meeting and reflected how much acrimony was going about the Club just now.  His report was rather unsettling.  He then went on to describe the problems he faced trying to secure funding for the Skegness Light Parade this year.  Unfortunately, traditional sources of funding were either drying up or were being very slow in offering their support.  In the past, it has cost around £4000 just to set up the parade and cover services such as fire, ambulance, road closures and traffic management etc.  But the increasing popularity of the event has attracted more and more spectators and so the authorities start to insist on even more security and safety coverage, which in turn causes costs to rise.  Overall, we are seeing diminishing returns for the event and although we managed to raise over £5000 last year for the MacMillan Nurses, it is now starting to cost more to support the event than we can expect to collect in donations.  If this trend continues and funding sources are not able to support us, we will be forced to cancel the event in favour of a "Drop out" weekend at the Golden Palm Holiday Park.

On a more optimistic note, this year's Wing Ding will take place at Wyberton Sports Centre between 10 - 13 July, and we discussed options for ride-outs on the Friday and Saturday.  A number of interesting venues were put forward and we will finalise the choices at our next meeting which is planned to take place on Sunday 22 June 2025.

One final and enjoyable note, was that Trevor and Marion received an award from the Hunstanton Light Parade, for the best lit solo bike.  Way to go Trevor and Marion.

Minutes of the meeting can be found in the "Members Area"
